1The Power of the Word
As I have discussed before, Mastery is doing the basics over and over and over again for a minimum of ten years (5 years – yes this is controversial)! Repetition is the mother of learning. And I have asked many masters what makes them a master? They repeated the same answer to me time and time again. “DO the BASICS WELL and EVERY TIME.”
What is the BASIC to learning a language?
Research by Hart and Risely in 1995 measured the language difference between a 4-year-old baby who has professional parents, versus welfare parents. Can you guess the result?
Answer: the difference is 30,000,000 words!
The professional 4 year old had heard 30,000,000 more words than the welfare kid.
Other studies show us that financially advantaged 3-year-olds knew 1100 words compared to 500 words for the disadvantages 3-year-olds. That’s double the word count by the age of 3! And the gap just keeps growing as time passes.
Vocabulary is the basics to the mastery of a language. Hearing the words millions and millions of times is the basics to the mastery of language.
I am shocked and stunned everyday as I listen to educators talk about grammar oddities, detailed exercises for your tongue, and whats the best packaged module to start a learner on! All the while ignoring the BASICS! Ignoring the core building blocks to language. Ignoring the MASTERY of the core simple repetition that is required to become a MASTER!
“DO the BASICS WELL and EVERY TIME.”

Similar studies on the aging population have shown that learning a language, or playing a music instrument, or talking up physical exercise changes most peoples brains by ten years!
Cognitive science studies have shown that you can take an 80 year old brain and increase their brain activity to equal to that of an average 70 year old.
YES YOU CAN LEARN AT ANY AGE! OUR BRAINS ARE TRULY AMAZING.
———————
In business its called the 80/20 rule. In problem solving there is often one big step that will clear up 8o% of the problem. But too many rush for the smaller 20% solution and miss the great opportunity to make a big difference. For example I had a friend the other day talk to me about study that showed people living with the air conditioner on were fatter than no air conditioner. So that was one way to get skinny! Damn that effect has got to be minuet compared to going outside and walking!!!!!!! GETTING PHYSICAL !
Every day at my work I would regularly ask, “What is the one most simple thing I can do right now, that will have the biggest impact on my current challenge?:” And them I would do that.
2How science can change your life!
Science has studied the brain for hundreds of years with little success. We were unable to see inside the brain. This all changed in 1975 with the invention of the MRI.
MRI scanning has given us amazing new insights into the most complicated object in the human body! Until recently we had no idea how it really worked! How does the brain make an emotion like sadness or joy? How does our brain meditate?
TODAY we can see exactly what the brain is doing during sadness or meditation, thanks to the MRI.
3What is Cognitive Science?什么是认知科学?
cog·ni·tive sci·ence

认知科学是一门研究讯息如何在大脑中形成以及转录过程的跨领域学科,其研究领域包括心理学、哲学、人工智能、神经科学、学习、语言学、人类学、社会学和教育学。
———————————
For years I personally wondered what was going on inside our minds when we learned. Starting at a very young age I would listen carefully to conversations and search for the truth in the words. How to Believe was a 30 year long journey of hard work and great discovery.“Why are you here in this program?” became my opening line for every group who hired me. The expected comments always surfaced such as; to improve, to get better, to be safer, to be smarter.“How do you know this program will produce that result?” was my next inquiry. Again the expected answers were returned; my friend said it was good, your reputation precedes you, well I hope it is good! Little did clients know that the educators also struggled with these answers. Did education really help people? How could we prove it? I was very lucky to have worked with two brilliant minds, leaders in the field of Cognition during my first career. Cognitive Science gave me the tools and the answers to these questions. Answers I had been searching for for most of my life. It helped me structure a clear understanding of the true results of our attempts to learn. Truths were uncovered, such as, if you train someone to use a gun in a safe gun program, did you know the incidents of shooting increases after the program? When you train corporate drivers how to control their cars in icy and extreme slippery conditions, did you know that their crashes increased immediately following the education? Did you know that most all the new driver programs throughout North America promoting safe driving and giving the new driver a discount increases the young drivers crash rates, as compared to those who receive no professional training, who learn on their own with their own families?
Did you know that research shows that 70% of all education programs for Corporations fails to produce the intended result, effectively proving that most group education fails miserably.Did you know that Pluto is no longer a planet? Officially it is not, as of 2006 ( 8 years ago!)
你知道吗,研究表明,70%的面向公司的教育项目未能产生预期的结果.有效地证明了大多数群体的教育彻底失败. 你知道,冥王星不再是行星?正式实在不行,截至2006年(8年前!)
Our brain is the most complex thing on earth. Science has been studying it for hundreds and hundreds of years with no real understanding. ‘Thinking’ was believed to be nothing real up to a few decades ago. Thinking was just air, something we just did but unprovable.
我们的大脑是世界上最复杂的东西。科学一直在研究它,数百年一直没有真正了解。几十年前,“思维”还被认为是没有什么真正的东西。我们以为思维只是空气,无法证明的东西。
In fact, thinking is very real and measurable today. It is chemical, biological, electrical and much more, as proven by science. And similar to the world being round not flat, and similar Pluto not a planet, it takes years, often decades to have the common person understand these powerful new discoveries.
事实上,当今发现思想是非常真实的和可衡量的。它是化学,生物,电力等等,它被科学证明了,跟世界是圆不是平坦类似,跟冥王星不是行星类似。这科学需要一般人几年,几十年去明白这些强大的新发现。
Did you know that people who learn two languages before the age of 13 develop both languages in the same part of their brain resulting in a larger portion of their brain? Yes a physically larger brain. Did you know that if you learn a second language after the age of 13 that second language is developed in a totally separate part of the brain, different from your mother language: a smaller part. And because of this, you will never be fluent in both languages, but the younger learner will be fluent.
你知不知道一个人13岁前学习两种语言,这两种语言是在大脑的同一部分形成,从而产生物理上更大的大脑。你知道吗,如果你在13岁后学习第二语言,第二语言是在大脑中与母语不同的地方形成。这是一个小的部位。因此,你永远不会同样地精通两种语言,但年轻的学习者会。
Did you know that many people learn thousands of words in the new language but they cannot speak because the words stored in reading and writing are in a totally separate part of your brain, than the spoken and listening words? So you may have a library of 5000 reading words but only 400 spoken words. They are different libraries. One is an older mature part of your brain, functioning for many years. And the other part is a baby part, very young!
你知道为什么很多人尽管学了上千英语单词,但他们说不了几个? 原因是关于存储阅读写作的语言部位和存储口语和听力语言部位在你的大脑中一个完全不同的部分。所以,你可能能阅读5000字,但只能听说400个字。它们在不同的储存库。一部分是你的大脑的早期成熟部分,运作了多年。而另一部分则是一个新生的部分,很年轻!
Our minds are very powerful complex learning organs. They learn in very specific ways common to all minds, with slight variations. Your mind is more like a solid state computer than it is a living animal:
我们的大脑是一个非常强大和复杂的学习机构。所有的大脑学习有个别差异和大部分非常相似的地方。你的大脑相比活生生的生物更像是一台固态的电脑。
It loves to explore and solve problems,
it wants order and clear structures.
it loves complex connections to a word, such as sounds, feeling, experiences
Repetition is the bedrock of learning.
Motivation and relevance are critical to success.
Your mind needs time to process new information into deep understanding.
It suffers with real pain while it accumulates new information. This means emotions are crucial to clear thinking.
Short term memory is extremely small.
Long term memory is huge!
And our brains are inherently lazy.
它喜欢探索和解决的问题,
它需要秩序和清晰的结构。
它喜欢一个字的各种复杂的连接,如声音,感觉,经验
重复是学习的基石。
动机和相关性是学习成功的关键。
你的大脑需要时间来处理新的信息,把它转化为深刻的理解。
当积累新的信息,你的大脑感受真正的痛。这意味着感情对清晰的思路是至关重要。
短期记忆容量是非常小的。
长期记忆容量是巨大的!
而我们的大脑天生懒惰。
Did you know that repetition thickens the coating covering the cells in your brain? The more you repeat the thicker the coating gets. This results in faster thinking, specifically a faster retrieval of that word!
你知不知道重复会加厚覆盖在你的大脑细胞的涂层。重复次数越多涂层涂层厚,这将导致更快的思考,更快的词检索。
This is the new science. Understanding this will maximize your speed of acquiring new information – LEARNING.
